Wakefield Gilbert & Sullivan Society

Hire the society

We can provide entertainment for your next social or fundraising event.

Our repertoire includes Touring Productions (semi-staged shows), fundraising Concerts, Carol Singing, Weddings and After Dinner Entertainment. There is more information below, as well as contact details and a factsheet at the bottom of the page.

Touring Productions

In April 2011 we undertook a new venture when we took The Sorcerer on tour. We gave a special performance for the Society for the Blind of Dewsbury, Batley and District in their own building, The Whitfield Centre. This single event raised over £1000 for the Society for the Blind.

Wakefield Gilbert and Sullivan Society provided the cast, costumes and props, programmes, piano, accompanist and musical director for a modest fee. We performed the whole show as far as possible as it had been done in the theatre the week before.

The Society for the Blind provided the venue, marketed the event, sold 100 tickets, and organised a supper for the audience.

Feedback from staff and visitors at The Whitfield Centre:

“Everyone in the audience had a brilliant night and were really impressed with what they saw, or heard!”

“my son-in-law was in stitches and really enjoyed himself”

“I really enjoyed myself and it was great to have that at the centre”

The event was so successful that we repeated it in 2012 with HMS Pinafore, and we put on an extra performance for Wakefield Riding for the Disabled at the Pennine Camphill Community which was also very well recieved.

We now put on similar “touring productions” every year. We are very happy to consider other venues and good causes if you would like us to provide a similar event. Please read our concert and touring factsheet and then get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Concerts

Rehearsing for a concert, Sep 2011

We have extensive experience of providing concerts in a variety of venues. Have a look at the Members’ Noticeboard or News Archive pages for information about some of our recent events. We provide an afternoon or evening of musical entertainment for a very modest fee. A chorus of about 10 – 20 members accompanied by our pianist perform an entertaining mixture of G&S and other light music, or we can tailor our performance to your specific needs. We can bring an electric piano if there isn’t one at your venue, and we can provide paper programmes for the audience. Here is an example: West Bretton 2011 programme Our concert for Dr Jackson’s Cancer Fund in November 2011 raised over £650 for the charity.

Feedback from staff at Dr Jackson’s Cancer Fund:

“Thank you so much for your and colleagues’ hard work and time spent in preparing and entertaining us with your Gilbert and Sullivan concert. The event was a huge success and I feel certain that that was in part due to your seamless and professional organisation.”

“Thanks a million once again for all your incredible commitment to our cause in your tireless and practical support – it is very much appreciated”

“G&S a la Carte”
We premiered our light-hearted version of the story of Gilbert and Sullivan at Nostell and Kinsley WI on the 16th January 2014. Penned by our own Jay Whittam, “G&S a la Carte” combines arias and choruses from the Savoy Operas with dialogue to create a mildly educational concert. The compact version is 45 minutes long, perfect for a group or society who usually enjoy a talk from a speaker, but want something a little different for their normal speaker’s fee. We can also provide an extended version as a full evening’s entertainment.

“We had a very enjoyable evening being entertained by the Wakefield Gilbert & Sullivan Society, they told the story of Gilbert and Sullivan in a very entertaining and amusing way, interspersing this with a selection of songs in a very professional way, a performance just for us, they are a very friendly group and well worth booking for any group.”

Carol Singing

Every year we go carol singing in variety of locations, often to raise money for Wakefield Hospice. You can book us to add to your festive atmosphere at any event you are organising this Christmas. We will usually charge a small fee or ask that we can take a collection, but we are very flexible and want to support as many local groups as we can, so please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Carol Singing at Wakefield Market

In 2013 we sang at a Christmas Party hosted by Arriva Yorkshire for their management team.

“I just wanted to drop you a line to say how very impressed we were with your team on Tuesday. We were so impressed with the carols, it sounded great, and everyone enjoyed the afternoon.” Michelle Cooper, Arriva Yorkshire Marketing Co-ordinator

Weddings

A small group of singers is the perfect way to achieve live music at your wedding or civil ceremony. We can provide music to entertain your guests as they arrive, Carols outside at a Christmas wedding, your favourite song as you walk down the aisle, background music during the celebrations afterwards or any combination of the above! Please get in touch if you want to discuss ideas.

After Dinner Entertainment

Live music adds something special to formal occasions. We have provided after-dinner musical entertainment for rotary clubs and Masonic events as well as singing at events such as the Pinderfields Hospital Volunteers Christmas Party. We can provide a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday and For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow at birthday parties or other celebrations.

and more . . .

We can also provide:

  • Full productions for the stage with scenery, costumes and full orchestra
  • Chamber music suitable for any venue; quartets, duets, and soloists
  • Our own electronic piano, in case your chosen venue doesn’t have one
